The Predicted One
Jesus came to earth in fulfillment of many prophecies.
Jesus said to His disciples, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and
the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." Luke 24:44. There are more than 300 predictions (prophecies) about the Messiah in the Old Testament. He was predicted by Moses ... predicted by the Prophets
... and predicted in the Psalms. Only one man in all of history has fulfilled all of the details of all of those prophecies. That man is Jesus. He is the Predicted One. This lesson covers 30 of those many
prophecies. It is in a different format from other eLessons …without study or personal reflection questions. This eLesson is a reference tool for your study and use. Each prediction from the Old Testament is
given with New Testament reference(s) to its fulfillment. Some verses are abbreviated by ellipses (…). Please make copies of this eLesson and distribute them freely.
I. PREDICTED BY MOSES
1. Jesus would crush Satan (represented in the Garden as a serpent) ... He did at the cross.
Genesis 3:14-15 "The Lord God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, cursed are you … I will put enmity
between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.'"
Hebrews 2:14-15 "Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives."
2. Jesus would be born of the seed of (in the lineage of) Abraham.
Genesis 22:15-18 "Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a
second time from heaven, and said, 'By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will
greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
because you have obeyed My voice.'"
Galatians 3:16 "Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed,' that is, Christ."
Matthew 1:1 "The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah,
the son of David, the son of Abraham …"
3. Jesus would be from the lineage of Jacob (renamed Israel) who was 1 of 2 sons of Isaac.
Numbers 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star shall come forth from Jacob, a scepter shall rise from Israel …"
Luke 3:34 "… the son of Jacob …" (In the genealogy of Jesus)
Revelation 22: 16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you
these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

Luke 3:33 "… the son of Judah …" (In the genealogy of Jesus)
5. Jesus would be a prophet ... He predicted His death and resurrection.
Deuteronomy 18:15-19 "The Lord your God will raise up for you a
prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him."
Matthew 16:21 "From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day." Also
in Matthew 20:17-19.
II. PREDICTED BY THE PROPHETS
6. Jesus would be born of a virgin ... of a young, pure, chaste woman.
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she
will call His name Immanuel."
Matthew 1:18-25 "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before
they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. But … an angel of the
Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you
shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.' … And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a
virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus."
7. Jesus would be called Immanuel, which means God with us.
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she
will call His name Immanuel."
John 1:1 and 14 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God." …and… "The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."
See Matthew 1:23 also.
8. He would be from the line of Jesse ... an obscure Old Testament family.
Isaiah 11:1-5 "Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, and He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by what His ears hear; but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the
afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, and faithfulness the
belt about His waist."
Luke 3:32 "… the son of Jesse ..." (In the genealogy of Jesus)
9. The Spirit of the Lord would rest upon Him ... anointing Him.
Isaiah 11:2 "The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, the spirit
of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord."
Mark 1:10-11 "Immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the
heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: 'You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.'"
10. He would perform miracles ... He healed the blind, deaf, and mute.
Isaiah 35:4-6 "Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come
with vengeance; the recompense of God will come, but He will save you. Then the eyes of the blind will be opened and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of
the mute will shout for joy …"
Matthew 9:35 "Jesus was going through all the cities and
villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness."
Also see John 9:1-7 (healed a blind man), Mark 7:32-35 (healed a deaf man), and Luke 11:14 (healed a mute man).
11. He would be preceded by a messenger ... by John the Baptist.
Isaiah 40:3 "A voice is calling, 'Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.'"
Matthew 3:1-3 "Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching
in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.' For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
"Make ready the way of the lord, make his paths straight!"’"
12. He would be flogged (whipped) and spit on ... blasphemously treated by men.
Isaiah 50:6 "I gave My back to those who strike Me, and My cheeks
to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting."
John 19:1 "Pilate then took Jesus and scourged (whipped) Him."
Matthew 26:67-68 "Then they spat in His face and beat Him with
their fists; and others slapped Him, and said, 'Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?'"
Matthew 27:30-31 "They spat on Him, and took the reed and began
to beat Him on the head. After they had mocked Him … and led Him away to crucify Him."
13. He would be silent before His accusers ... before priests and Pilate.
Isaiah 53:7 "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did
not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth."
Matthew 27:12-14 "And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. Then Pilate said to Him,
'Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?' And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed."
14. He would be buried in a rich man's tomb ... that of rich Joseph of Arimathea.
Isaiah 53:9 "His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth."
Matthew 27:57-60 "When it was evening, there came a rich man from
Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped
it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away."
15. He would be numbered with the transgressors ... with the two thieves.
Isaiah 53:12 "Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the
great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the
transgressors."
Matthew 27:38 "At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left."
16. He would be of the House of David ... one of eight sons of Jesse.
Jeremiah 23:5 "'Behold, the days are coming,' declares
the Lord, 'When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.'"
Luke 3:31-32 "…the son of David, the son of Jesse …" (In the genealogy of Jesus)
17. Darkness would cover the land ... it did when He died on the cross.
Amos 8:9 "'It will come about in that day,' declares the Lord God, 'That I will make the sun go down at noon and make the earth dark in broad daylight.'"
Luke 23:44-45 "It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell
over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two."
18. He would be born in Bethlehem ... not in Mary's hometown of Nazareth.
Micah 5:2 "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be
among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity."
Luke 2:4-7 "Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of
Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they
were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn."
19. He would enter Jerusalem as a king riding the foal of a donkey … celebrated Palm Sunday.
Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in
triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
Luke 19:35-38 "They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their
coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began
to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: 'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest!'"
20. He would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver … no more, no less …and silver rather than gold.
Zechariah 11:12-13 "I said to them, 'If it is good in your
sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!' So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages. Then the Lord said to me, 'Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued
by them.' So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the Lord."
Matthew 26:14-16 "Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said, 'What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?' And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to
betray Jesus."
Matthew 27:3-8 "Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that
He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, 'I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.' But they said, 'What is that to
us? See to that yourself!' And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, 'It is not
lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.' And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. For this reason
that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day."
21. He would be forsaken by His sheep ... by His disciples and followers.
Zechariah 13:7 "'Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, and
against the man, My Associate,' declares the Lord of hosts.'Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; and I will turn My hand against the little ones.'"
Mark 14:50 "And they all left Him and fled."
III. PREDICTED IN THE PSALMS
22. He would be resurrected ... conquering death.
Psalm 16:10 "For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol (the place of the dead); nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay."
Acts 2:30-32 "And so, because he (David) was a prophet and knew
that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer
decay. This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses."
23. People would wag their heads at Him ... mocking and disapproving.
Psalm 22:7-8 "All who see me sneer at me; they separate with the
lip, they wag the head, saying, 'Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.'"
Mark 15:29-31 "Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him,
wagging their heads, and saying, 'Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross!' In the same way the chief priests also, along
with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, 'He saved others; He cannot save Himself.'"
24. His hands and feet would be pierced ... stoning was the normal execution.
Psalm 22:16-17 "For dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers
has encompassed me; they pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me."
Luke 23:33 "When they came to the place called The Skull, there
they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left."
24. His garments would be divided among others ... and lots cast for His clothes.
Psalm 22:18 "They divide my garments among them, and for my
clothing they cast lots."
John 19:23-24 "Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus,
took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. So they said to one another, 'Let us not tear it, but cast lots for
it, to decide whose it shall be.'"
26. None of His bones would be broken ... broken legs were the normal conclusion in crucifixion.
Psalm 34:20 "He keeps all his bones, not one of them is broken."
John 19:32-33 "So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the
first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs."
27. A friend would betray him ... His disciple Judas betrayed Him.
Psalm 41:9 "Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my
bread, has lifted up his heel against me."
Matthew 10:4 "… and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him."
28. He would be given gall and vinegar.
Psalm 69:21 "They also gave me gall for my food and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."
Matthew 27:34 "They gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall (a drink to deaden pain); and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink."
John 19:28-29 "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had
already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, 'I am thirsty.' A jar full of sour wine (vinegar) was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the
sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth."
29. He would teach in parables ... one of many teaching styles.
Psalm 78:2 "I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark
sayings of old."
Matthew 13:34 "All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables …"
30. He would be a priest ... but not a Levite.
Psalm 110:4 "The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
'You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.'"
Hebrews 3:1 "Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession."
Hebrews 5:9-10 "And having been made perfect, He became to all
those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek."
Note: Melchizedek was a priest in the days of Abraham before the Levitical Priesthood was established. Therefore, the priesthood of
Jesus was outside the priesthood of the Law.
CONCLUSION: This partial list of fulfilled prophecies
about Jesus is provided for two reasons. First, it provides credible proof that Jesus is the One predicted in the Old Testament to come to earth as the Messiah (the Savior). Believing in Him is not an irrational
leap in the dark, but rather a rational step into the light. If you have not personally put your faith in Jesus as your savior, please visit www.911GOD.org to learn how to do that. Second, this eLesson is provided to give increased confidence to those of you who have already believed in Jesus … confidence in your walk and words.
